Rising Microplastics in Soil a Threat to UK Food Security, MPs and Campaigners Say

The notion that plastic is ubiquitous in modern life is hardly news. However, the increasing evidence pointing to microplastics as a pervasive pollutant seeping into soil – and ultimately, our food chain – is alarming.

According to a recent report by the all-party parliamentary group (APPG) on microplastics, UK agricultural soils are among the most contaminated in Europe. The repeated application of sludge from water treatment works as fertilizer has led to a buildup of microplastic particles in soil. Climate change and extreme weather events put additional pressure on agriculture, making it crucial to protect our soil from these pressures.

Microplastics are pieces of plastic between 1 micrometre and 5 millimetres in size, shed by the breakdown of everyday items such as synthetic textiles, packaging, paints, cosmetics, or car tires. These particles can permeate biological membranes, allowing them to infiltrate our bodies. Prof Cressida Bowyer, senior author of the report, notes that “everywhere we look, we find microplastics.”

The presence of microplastics in soil has devastating effects on soil structure, microbial communities, and fauna, including earthworms ingesting microplastics undergoing physiological changes. The chemical cocktail that is plastic is not inert; over 16,000 chemicals are used in plastics, with about 4,000 known to be hazardous to human health. Microplastics can also pick up contaminants from their environment, becoming like sponges or magnets for bacteria, heavy metals, viral particles, and other chemicals.

The APPG’s report makes five policy recommendations: legally binding targets for cutting microplastic pollution, regulation of large sources of releases, extended producer responsibility, improved wastewater, sewage sludge, and soil protections, and a coordinated national monitoring system. Dr Antaya March, co-author of the report, emphasizes that “we should not wait for every scientific uncertainty to be resolved before acting where the evidence already shows that intervention can prevent pollution and reduce future risks.”

The UK government must take decisive action to address this silent threat, implementing policies that prioritize prevention over Band-Aid solutions. Microplastics in soil are not just an environmental issue but also a human health concern. The question now is: will the government heed the warnings and act decisively to reduce microplastic pollution? Or will it continue to treat this issue as an afterthought, leaving our soil – and consequently, our food security – vulnerable to these invisible pollutants?

    The microplastic crisis in our soils is far from isolated to UK agriculture - its effects are just as pervasive in urban gardens and backyards where garden waste compost is often used. Many of us who've been gardening for years have unknowingly contributed to the problem by using mulch made from contaminated wood products or importing potting mixes with microplastic filler. We need to rethink our approach to home gardening, investing in organic alternatives and prioritizing soil health over convenience.

What worries me is that we're still using sludge from water treatment works as fertilizer – a Band-Aid solution at best.
