By prohibiting AI tools, colleges are failing to equip students with skills essential for an economy where advanced AI expertise is increasingly vital.

This should be a wake-up call for educators: instead of trying to banish AI from campus, we should be embracing its potential and teaching students how to harness it effectively.
Colleges must confront the reality that a college education is worth less in the age of AI if it doesn’t equip students with critical thinking skills, judgment, and the ability to navigate complex problems – areas where AI falls short. By not teaching students how to use these skills in conjunction with AI, we’re setting them up for failure.
Take Dartmouth College’s approach as an example. Critical AI librarians play a crucial role by helping students and faculty interrogate these models and recognize their biases.
However, it’s not just about technical skills. As more jobs require advanced AI expertise, employers will increasingly expect graduates to have developed certain soft skills – discernment, for instance, or the ability to navigate uncertainty. By teaching students how to approach AI critically and use these tools effectively, colleges can give them a competitive edge in an increasingly demanding job market.
Every college must chart its own course in adapting to the AI era. However, by embracing this challenge and working collaboratively with industry partners, educators can help students develop the skills they need to thrive in a world shaped by artificial intelligence.
The alternative – trying to prohibit or banish AI from campus – is simply not viable. By doing so, colleges would neglect their responsibility to prepare students for the workforce of the future and potentially squander the chance to shape how this technology gets used in the world. It’s time for educators to stop fighting the tide and start embracing the inevitability of AI.
Ultimately, the question is not whether we can prevent AI from changing the college experience – it’s a done deal.
